Preliminary study of phase-shifting strobo-stereoscopy for cutting tool monitoring

Monitoring cutting tool quality in the machining process is essential to success of part manufacturing. To directly monitor information tools under drilling or milling operations, this paper presents a novel 3D imaging technique enable direct geometry measurement. This method combines stroboscopy and stereoscopy, strobo-stereoscopy, which synchronizes stroboscopic illumination system with spindle control enables in-situ reconstructing images tools. For phase-locked mode, can lock image while motion. On other hand, for phase-shifting all facets around will be scanned by shifting phase light signals collecting dimensional target information. Experimental studies modes monitoring an end mill wood rolling pin were presented. The measured maps whole on verify capability identification proposed strobo-stereoscopic technology. Lastly, potential applications technology discussed.
